Diverse benefits of fee-based annuities

Many financial professionals are using managed accounts to help clients pursue their financial goals rather than sell them products. As the business model shifts and gains popularity, advisory annuities offer many attractive options.

  • Benefits such as tax deferral,* income protection and legacy wealth transfer options
  • Cost transparency and flexibility
  • Platform integration

Key considerations for fee-based annuities

Available in an advisory share class

These annuities generally have lesser internal expenses than traditional variable annuities and greater caps for registered index-linked annuities (RILAs) and fixed index annuities. Advisory fees will still apply.

Clients’ money isn’t locked up

No surrender charges, withdrawal charges or contingent deferred sales charges. So your clients’ money is not locked up, and they aren’t necessarily penalized for walking away from the contract.

Flexibility within managed accounts

Although they still have the same tax rules as other annuities, including the tax penalties on gains distributed prior to age 59½, there is flexibility to discount advisory fees.§

Variable annuity

Jackson Retirement Investment Annuity®

This fee-based variable annuity designed with RIAs in mind provides tax-deferred, institutionally priced and managed investments along with add-on benefits to pursue income protection and legacy opportunities.

Annuities are long-term, tax-deferred vehicles designed for retirement. Variable annuities and registered index-linked annuities involve investment risks and may lose value. Earnings are taxable as ordinary income when distributed. Individuals may be subject to a 10% additional tax for withdrawals before age 59½ unless an exception to the tax is met. Add-on benefits are available for an extra charge in addition to the ongoing fees and expenses of the annuity and may be subject to conditions and limitations.

*Tax deferral offers no additional value if an IRA or qualified plan, such as a 401(k), is used to fund an annuity and may be found at a lower cost in other investment products. It also may not be available if the annuity is owned by a legal entity such as a corporation or certain types of trusts.

The advisory fee may be higher than what a client would pay if they purchased a comparable commission-based annuity.

With variable annuities, a contract charge and subaccount charges apply. Add-on benefits are available for an extra charge in addition to the ongoing fees and expenses of the variable annuity and may be subject to conditions and limitations. There is no guarantee that an annuity with an add-on living benefit will provide sufficient supplemental retirement income. A market value adjustment (MVA) may apply to withdrawals from the fixed index annuities and registered index-linked annuities. The MVA may result in an increase or decrease to amounts removed from the contract. Additionally, withdrawals from registered index-linked annuities may be subject to an interim value adjustment.

§The cost of an advisor’s fees should be considered, which are based on the total assets in the fee-based program.

**Select up to 99 investments and adjust options or allocations up to 25 times each contract year without transfer fees. To prevent abusive trading practices, Jackson restricts the frequency of transfers among variable investment options including trading out of and back into the same subaccount within a 15-day period.

††Add-on benefits that provide income for the length of a designated life and/or lives may be available for an additional charge. The amount of income that these benefits may provide can vary depending on the age when income is taken, and how many lives are covered when the benefit is elected. The cost of these benefits may negatively impact the contract's cash value.

‡‡Lifetime income of the add-on benefit becomes effective at issue if the designated life is age 59½ at issue, or upon the contract anniversary following designated life's 59½ birthday, provided the contract value is greater than zero and has not been annuitized.

§§Diversification does not assure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market.
